The original piece of art made by master Salzillo was commissioned by his friend Don Jesualdo Riquelme Fontes in order to decorate his palace. Its creation was started in 1776. Due to the size of the project, with more than 500 human figures (without counting animals and accessories), master Salzillo died in 1783 without having finished it. The project had to be completed by his disciples years after his death.
The Salzillo’s Nativity Scene consists of 556 figures of 25-30 centimeters made in clay, wood and cardboard. The images are based on the Gospels of St. Matthew and St. Luke, Salzillo is telling the biblical story of the birth of Christ from the Annunciation to the Flight into Egypt.
